Muslin: This summer's must-have delicate fabric

Originally, muslin was a precious fabric that only the rich and nobility could afford. Today, this wonderfully light summer material is perfect for hot days and balmy nights. What makes muslin fabric so special and how can you style it? Let's check out the trend!

What is muslin?

Muslin is a type of weave used primarily for cotton. Finely twisted yarns are woven into a light and airy fabric with a gauzy texture. One of the most famous Baroque paintings depicts Marie Antoinette in a muslin dress. The fashion queen made the once almost priceless fabric the it-look of high society. The material went out of fashion for a while, although it remained popular for muslin bedding and baby essentials. Now, this summer companion is making a big comeback – for young and old, men and women, trendsetters and purists alike.

Muslin looks for every day

Similar to linen, muslin is a summer essential: shirts, blouses and trousers made from muslin help combat the heat and effectively absorb moisture. Cotton muslin is perfect for children's summer clothing and the ideal fabric for favourite combinations of shorts and summer tops. In winter, a base layer of muslin is also a great idea to prevent moisture build-up under heavy outerwear. Either way, the fabric always has a casual look and pairs well with your everyday wardrobe favourites.

Washing and caring for muslin: wrinkles are welcome!

To maintain its signature crinkled look and prevent the fibres from shrinking, always wash muslin fabric at low temperatures on a gentle cycle. It's best to use a laundry bag. Sorting colours is a must, as muslin can release dye when washed. Give the tumble dryer a break and simply let your muslin blouse or trousers air-dry. Ironing muslin? Completely unnecessary – after all, wrinkles are part of the charm.
