The World Capital of Wine
Bordeaux is synonymous with world-famous wines, living tradition and the sweet art of French living, the savoir-vivre. Welcome!
An Imperial Classification
Winemaking in Bordeaux dates back to the 1st century AD. It was none other than the ancient Romans who planted their vines around what is now Saint-Émilion. By the Middle Ages, wines from Bordeaux had already become a sought-after international export. The English, in particular, developed a taste for these French wines! In fact, we have them to thank for the term "Claret" (a synonym for a light, pale red wine). In 1855, Napoleon III commissioned the Bordeaux Classification, which remains the standard to this day. It organises the best châteaus into a hierarchical system. The most coveted title: "Grand Cru Classé" – the mark of a top-quality wine!
